Underfloor heating is continuing to grow in popularity and we’re quite often asked whether you can install underfloor heating in a room with carpet, as opposed to wood or tiling.

We advise that underfloor heating is most beneficial in wooden or tiled rooms, however we understand that some customers don’t want to remove their carpet, so we don’t rule it out immediately. There are some considerations that need to take place before a final decision can be made which we will support you on.

The best thing to do is to contact us so that we can send a representative to visit your home and assess the room/s where you’d like to have underfloor heating installed. We’re specialists in underfloor heating so will be happy to advise you on the best solution.

Carpeted rooms can work with underfloor heating, but it does depend on their size and usage. For example, a big room with a lot of furniture in it, may not be the best choice as the heat will not be able to transfer through both the carpet and the furniture to heat the room sufficiently.

However, carpeted bathrooms are more likely to be a good candidate for underfloor heating, mainly because of how the carpet is laid in the room. In most bathrooms the carpet is fitted around furniture items such as bathtubs and toilets, instead of underneath them. This way the underfloor heating only has to travel through the carpet and not get blocked by any furniture.

Carpet density levels also need to be assessed as denser carpet piles may act as too much of an insulator and prevent the heat from transferring into the room itself. However, if you are happy to replace the carpet we can discuss with you what sort of carpets would be more suitable.

Overall, we advise that carpet is not out of bounds when it comes to underfloor heating installations, but we like to highlight to our customers that you do need to consider a few things before you go ahead and install it. If you want more advice or have some specific questions, get in touch and we’d be happy to help.
