If you are considering installing a new boiler to upgrade an older less efficient one, this is the perfect opportunity to also change the position of your boiler to be more convenient.

Boiler location can vary depending on the style and size of your home. We will talk you through a few things to consider when deciding on a location for your boiler.

Due to the plumbing and piping required to connect to the boiler, they tend to be installed in kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms. From an aesthetic perspective a utility room is usually the ideal place for a boiler, so it doesn’t stand out too much as most people won’t go into your utility room. However, not everyone has a utility room, so our second-best recommendation is the kitchen, as they tend to be bigger than most peoples’ bathrooms.

We’d always recommend looking up the dimensions of any new boiler and measuring up where you think you want it to be installed. This way you can get a real feel for how it will be incorporated into the room.

We are often asked if we can install boilers into lofts, the simple answer is yes, we can, but there are a couple of requirements. Ensure your loft is well lit and has a loft ladder installed to allow engineers easy and safe access. You also need to check that the loft wall can withstand the weight of a boiler. Your loft should be well insulated so that it is protected against frost and your boiler will not easily freeze. Overall, lofts aren’t the ideal location, but it can be done so long as the correct precautions are taken.

You should be aware of regulations regarding boiler installations. These state that modern condensing boilers need a discharge pipe which will need to be positioned through an external wall. Therefore, your boiler needs to be within reasonable distance from an outside wall to avoid lengthy pipework through your home. There are also clearance distances from windows and doors that need to be considered, but these vary depending on the boiler you choose so try to look these up when making your location decision.

Whatever location you choose for your boiler it is vital that it is accessible. If there are ever any issues with your boiler you will need a trained professional to look at it. So, it shouldn’t be too hidden away or have too much furniture/ clutter around it. You may also want to amend controls and thermostats, so the easier it is to access it the easier it is to amend these controls!
